God and Man

March 31, 2011

Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man. This is something difficult for our minds to understand, however it is revealed biblical teaching and is orthodox church doctrine.

We call the truth the hypostatic union. The word hypostatic is rooted in the greek word hupostasis. That is the word used in Hebrews 1:3

Hebrews 1:3 ESV

3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

This is a doctrine that is taken from more than one passage however. It is spread out over the New Testament.

Jesus is shown as man:

He was tempted.

Matthew 4:1ESV

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

He is spoken of as a mediator for men.

1 Timothy 2:5 ESV

5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

He died.

Romans 5:8 ESV

8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus is shown as God:

John 1:1 ESV

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Colossians 2:9 ESV

9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,

John 20:28 ESV

28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

John 10:30 ESV

30 I and the Father are one.”

Jesus is shown as both God and man:

John 1:14 ESV

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Philippians 2:6-11 ESV

6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

So we see that biblically Jesus Christ is both God and man. In order for him to be our savior it needed to be that way. Since the fall, only God can be sinless naturally and only a sinless man can make atonement for other men.

Isaiah 53:11-12 ESV

11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see  and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
